Chelodina steindachneri is found in Western Australia from the Erwin river north of Perth up to the De Gray River. Chelodina steindachneri prefers the permanent sections of the Murchison,-Wooramel,- Gascoyne,- Ashburton and Foresque River, but is also found inland where the water can be seasonal or occasional.
Chelodina steindachenri is a relative small turtles with Carapax length between 15 and 19 cm (6 to 8 inch). The plastron is straw yellow with white seams and the brownish and almost round shape of the Carapax has given the turtle its common name.
