Elusor macrurus
(Cann & Legler, Cogger, 2000)
Mary River Turtle

The Mary River Turtle had escaped the notice of herpetologists until it was described in 2000 by John Cann. Besides the giant snakeneck turtle, Elusor macrurus is one of the largest freshwater turtles of Australia. It can grow up to 30-40cm and is known only from  the major tributaries and the main stream of the Mary River in Eastern Australia. The Carapax is dark brown and the Plastron greyish.
